I am a 24-year-old female from Michigan, currently living near Memphis, TN, and working in the web department of a nonprofit conservation organization. I am using this blog as a means of figuring out who I am and exposing that reality to the world. The meaning behind this blog’s title is fourfold: 1) Autumne is my middle name; 2) I am reflecting on life and my own identity; 3) Reflection implies water, which is my favorite element and natural setting; and 4) Autumn is, without a doubt, my favorite season, filled with peace, warm sweaters, apple cider, crunchy leaves, flushed cheeks, cuddling under wool blankets and watching spectacular harvest sunsets.

The major elements of my life are: friends/family, work (see Ed. & Emp. section), exercise/nutrition, learning, volunteering and faith. My evenings and weekends usually consist of reading, spending time with the dogs and cats at the Memphis Humane Society, hanging out with a friend or two, trying out a new church and going to the gym. I also tend to take my work home with me. After quitting the second job I’d been working for more than a year, I just haven’t been able to break the habit. Years of poor nutrition and no physical activity whatsoever have wreaked havoc on my body, so I am in the midst of an effort to restore some element of health and wellness. I spend about 2 hours at the gym 4-6 days a week and try to make healthy eating choices. And after years of neglecting my faith and my relationship with God, I am re-embarking on the spiritual journey that I started 8 years ago in youth group. I am on the lookout for a solid church family with whom I will mesh well.

Education & Employment

I graduated in 2006 from Michigan State University with a B.A. in journalism, emphasis on copy editing and magazine writing. In 2005, I completed an internship as a naturalist at Fripp Island Resort in South Carolina. That summer, along with my existing love of animals, inspired me to find a job somewhere in the conservation field. But since I knew I’d never be a biology genius, I tried to find a way through my writing. My last semester of college, I took a computer science class that included HTML and some CSS – my love of web design was born. After graduation, I was accepted as an intern within my current company, at a satellite office in Ann Arbor. At first, my job combined the writing/editing and the conservation, but very little of the web work. My internship was extended by four months, and I was given the freedom to redesign our satellite office’s web pages. Modestly impressed by my work and in need of another set of hands, my current supervisor sought me out for a yearlong position at the company’s national headquarters, where I now work. I am combining all three of my areas of interest again, and I love what I do. I’m currently trying to broaden my horizons and my knowledge of the web and its inner workings by learning more about CSS, trying to understand JavaScript and looking over the shoulders of my colleagues as often as I can.
